Many of the residents that were evacuated from Seapoint and Hornsy Roads early this morning due to a large slip that blocked Breakwater Road, have been able to return to their homes this afternoon.

There are, however, two homes that require further inspection by the Earthquake Commission after Council building inspectors and Geotech engineers deemed them unsafe. The land below the properties is still considered to be at risk of subsiding.

Residents from these two properties have arranged to stay with friends and family. The welfare centre set-up at Napier Intermediate, in Jull Street, has now closed but should any need arise, it will be re-opened immediately.

It is anticipated Breakwater Road will be re-opened to two-lane traffic by 5pm.

Napier Civil Defence will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as they become available.
