HAWKE'S BAY

Flood hit areas along the coast of Hastings District have escaped any further damage, after more rain fell in the area on Monday night.

The coastal community’s of Clifton, Te Awanga, Ocean Beach and Waimarama are in recovery mode, after severe flooding forced residents from their homes and slips closed roads, last week.

In Te Awanga, a total of 37 homes have been red stickered, which means residents aren’t allowed to stay in their homes overnight. Of those, 23 were stickered for problems with septic tanks and 14 had been cleared by Monday evening. Another 14 homes in Te Awanga have experienced varying degrees of internal flood damage and those issues will take some time to remedy.

The township of Waimarama was badly affected by flooding, requiring 66 homes to be red stickered. 50 of those relate to problems with septic tanks and 38 have now been cleared. 16 homes have experienced varying degrees of internal flood damage which will take some time to remedy.

NOTE: Once the issue which sees a home red stickered has been rectified, a re-inspection is undertaken and if the identified issues have been resolved, residents can return home.
