The Waitaki District is about to benefit from a series of free road safety refresher courses specifically designed for older drivers.

The aim of the workshops will be to help build the confidence of senior road users and increase their knowledge of Road Code changes, safe driving practices and other transport options.

Community Safety Officer Helen Algar says “For many older people driving is a key to their independence, and many seniors rely on their car to get around – for shopping, appointments or visiting friends and family. This series of workshops and resources are designed to help people maintain that independence while also staying safe on the road. While older drivers don't have as many crashes as younger drivers, if they do crash they are more at risk of being seriously injured or killed. This is due to increasing physical fragility and can have a devastating impact.”

The courses, which are part of the Waitaki District Council Road Safety Programmes, will include a free practical driving option for those who wish to take up the opportunity as well as a mobility scooter workshop.

Mrs Algar would like to encourage people to attend “this is a unique opportunity to reinforce what you know and build confidence. Session two provides one hour with a certified driving instructor giving a comprehensive refresher.”

Session one is on Monday the 16th of May at the Oamaru Plunket Rooms beginning at 10.a.m
People can register for one or more sessions. All three sessions are free of charge. For further information contact Jean Paterson on (03) 434 8542 or Derek Beveridge (03) 434 1055.

Be quick places are limited to 20.
