New Zealand’s domain name extension is .nz. When registering or purchasing a .nz domain name, you are in effect buying the license to have access and use of that domain name.

You are unable to register a .nz as New Zealand has 2nd level domain extensions, they include; .co.nz, .net.nz and .org.nz. The most popular extension is the .co.nz with 254,285 registrations with the second being .net.nz with 17,813.

The Office of Domain Name Commissioner, DNC, is responsible for overseeing and managing the .nz system. The DNC is an operational office of Internet NZ, being an Incorporated Society. You are unable register or purchase a domain name through the DNC.

The DNC has authorised Registrars, who have paid and adhere to rules assigned to them. These Registrars are responsible for managing and looking after your domain names.

Their are 57 Registrars that are connected to the SRS with the yearly domain name license fee ranging from $22.95 through to $168.00 plus GST. You are able to own as many domain names as you wish and you can pay the license fee up to 10 years in advance.
