Kaikoura people are being given the chance to have a say in the future of their district’s water resources by becoming part of the Kaikōura Water Management Zone Committee.

“This is an exciting opportunity for Kaikōura people to make a real difference in local decision-making around water issues,” said Environment Canterbury Commissioner David Bedford.

The Kaikōura Zone Committee, a joint committee of Environment Canterbury and Kaikōura District Council, will address water issues in line with the Canterbury Water Management Strategy.

“People who are interested in getting involved in water issues should attend one of the public meetings where they can get more information and have the opportunity to ask questions.”

The public information meetings on the role of the Kaikōura Zone Committee and the Canterbury Water Management Strategy are scheduled for:

• 5:30pm Tuesday 31 May at the Memorial Hall, Kaikōura
• 5.30pm Tuesday 7 June at Woodbank School, Clarence.

The Expression of Interest Form and other documents are available on the Canterbury Water website.
Applications to be considered for the Kaikōura Zone Committee must be received by Wednesday June 15.

People on the zone committees will be expected to work collaboratively and with the community to develop water management solutions that give effect to the principles and targets of the Canterbury Water Management Strategy.

Four to seven community members will be appointed to the zone committee.

Candidates will undertake a thorough assessment and appointment process before a decision is made. Members are appointed for a three year term.

To be considered for appointment, candidates must either live in, or have a significant relationship with the zone. Applicants will be assessed on their skills, expertise, experience and their ability to work together to develop water management solutions that deliver economic, social, cultural and environmental outcomes.

Applications can be submitted via email to admin@canterburywater.org.nz or by post to CWMS Water Programm, Environment Canterbury, PO Box 345, Christchurch.
