It is a breach of council bylaws to prune the trees planted on public berms.

Sometimes well-meaning residents trim branches but the council asks that, rather than taking their own action when they think a tree needs attention, people first call the council.

The council has made a big investment in our street trees and employs professional arborists to look after them. Incorrect pruning can seriously harm a tree, limiting its life or distorting its shape.

Where there are issues with shade or footpath encroachment, people are urged to ring the council’s Reserves section to discuss concerns.

Council takes legal action in cases where trees are ‘butchered’. One prosecution is currently pending. In cases where the court enters a conviction, a fine may be imposed.

In some cases the council accepts restitution for repairs to trees that have been damaged or recompense for the cost of replacing trees that cannot be restored to an acceptable standard.
