Video of Stopping Distances Demonstrations
Last week 25 stopping distance demonstrations were run throughout the Tasman and Nelson region.
In total around 37 schools and 5,000 children witnessed the demonstrations which graphically showed the difference between stopping at 20kph, 50kph and 60kph.
A trained driver shows the distance it takes to stop at various speeds. The key messages are:
On average every year 17 New Zealand children are killed after being struck by vehicles.
On average every week six New Zealand children go to hospital after being struck by vehicles.
At 60kph compared to 50kph you will take almost 50% longer to stop.
The following video is from stopping distance demonstrations held at Murchison Area School and Tapawera Area School.
