Contractors working on the Thames street roading improvements inadvertently struck a water main on Tuesday afternoon. The high pressure water main caused disruption to traffic, pedestrians and business before being brought under control by Councils contractors.

Council Asset Manager – Water / Wastewater, Martin Pacey noted:

“While unexpected, road works and in particular excavations can sometimes result in damage to utilities and other mains supplies. The cause of the failure was a disused service pipe that had been capped. These old connections are often difficult to locate and can be very easily dislodged when disturbing the ground around them.”

Council apologises for the inconvenience this mishap may have caused and anticipates the completion date of the Thames Street roading project should not be materially impacted.
