Rural champ take out title

Fencing has been part of Fieldays since the inception of the event, and is an essential part of not only the event but of New Zealand farming. The gruelling competition is extremely demanding as it can take up to six hours to complete while still maintaining a high quality fence.

The Golden Pliers, the sought after singles trophy was won by Hawkes Bay farmer Paul Van Beers. Paul is a legend in the fencing competition and has won the Golden Pliers a record of 13 times. Jeff Joines from Paraparaumu came second and Shane Bouskill from Waipawa received third place.

The Silver Spades section of the Fencing Championships, the doubles competition was won by the highly skilled duo, Wayne Newdick and John Steedman. Shane Bouskill and Gordon Hansen come in at second place and Matt Jones and Jeff Joines received third.

The Bill Schuler round encourages up and coming fencers to hone in on their skills and better their abilities. Jared Nicholson won the Bill Schuler trophy and was the best first year fencer.
