Coastal surge threat remains around Hawke's Bay coastline

Residents in coastal areas around Hawke’s Bay are being warned to remain vigilant following a 7.8 earthquake which struck near the Kermadec Islands.

A warning of strong coastal surges striking the coast throughout the day remains in force.

Occupants at the Te Awanga and Clifton Beach motor camps and Ocean Beach settlement were evacuated this morning and residents of 21 homes along the Haumoana water front were also asked to move out, as a precaution.

High tide is expected at around 10.25 this morning.

People are urged to stay off the beaches, stay out of the water and don’t go sightseeing in the coastal areas until well after the surge threat has passed.
