Minister Appoints New Local Govt Commission Chair

Minister of Local Government Rodney Hide today announced the appointment of Basil Morrison to the position of Chair of the Local Government Commission.

“Mr Morrison has considerable experience in local government, having been Chairman of the Ohinemuri County Council, Mayor of Hauraki District, a member of the Waikato Regional Council, Chair of Local Government New Zealand and Chair and Vice Chair of the Commonwealth Local Government Forum from 2005 to 2009,” Minister Hide said.

“He is also Chair of the Local Government New Zealand Superannuation Board of Trustees, a director of Landcorp Farming Ltd and Civic Assurance, and a member of both the Waitangi Tribunal and the New Zealand Geographic Board.

“Mr Morrison’s extensive knowledge of local government matters at a local, national and international level will be of great benefit to the Commission.”

The Local Government Commission is an independent statutory body established under the Local Government Act 2002. Its main roles are to make decisions about the structure and boundaries of local government and the representation arrangements for local authorities.
