Environment Southland has been working with stakeholders to develop policies and rules for managing the environmental effects associated with discharges from closed landfills. A proposed plan change has been notified and submissions close on Friday, 5 August 2011.

Highlights of the new plan provisions include aligning certain types of resource consent to a level of risk posed by the discharges from a closed landfill. Risk assessments of a closed landfill will be required to determine its level of risk to people and the environment.

These changes will ensure the region’s many closed landfills are safe and any effects are avoided, remedied or mitigated.

You can make a submission on any part of the plan change - positive or negative. Click here to download a copy of the plan change and submission form, or call Environment Southland and ask to be sent an information pack on Plan Change 10A.

Any person or organisation may make a submission. Submissions must be received by Environment Southland no later than 5.00pm, Friday 5 August 2011.
