The major upgrade of the Heretaunga Street 300 block (between King and Nelson Streets) is on track to be completed in time for the Rugby World Cup, which begins in September.

Reasonably dry winter weather has meant progress on the improvements to the northern side of the street have remained on schedule.

The replacement of underground stormwater pipes is almost complete and the laying of the new footpath on the north side of the street will begin next week. Once that is completed, parking will be restored on the north side while work begins on the south side.

Hastings City Business Association General Manager Jane Janes says” despite the obvious challenges, council and retailers are working well together on the project. The CBD is going to take on a new look which is sure to be appreciated by the retailers, residents and visitors alike. Many retailers have got behind the upgrade and are running special promotions and offering special service.”

Mike Thomson from Thomson’s Suits says” the changes being made to the street will be a great boost for all businesses. It will bring a new sense of vitality to Heretaunga Street at a time when Hastings will come alive with a range of exciting events, as part of the REAL NZ Festival.”

Mr Thomson says” the new roading and footpaths will give the street an upmarket look and feel which will help both retailers and shoppers.”

Hastings CBD signature street lights, seating, bike racks and rubbish bins will be installed before the road surface is reshaped and resealed.

Mrs Janes says” it’s all about making a positive experience for people coming into the CBD with the street becoming safer and friendlier for all users.”
