Sir Colin ‘Pinetree’ Meads thanked Taupō Mayor Rick Cooper for the Council’s support of King Country Rugby Union (KCRU) yesterday morning with a mounted King Country jersey.

All Black of the Century, and King Country player, Sir Colin Meads was in Taupō yesterday (Monday 18 July) for the Rugby World Cup 2011 Roadshow. Sir Colin and KCRU CEO David Trewavas, took the opportunity to thank the Mayor and CEO Rob Williams for the Council’s support for the King Country Rugby team last season and this year in the form of jersey advertising.

Taupō Venues saw the opportunity as a unique way to advertise their brand, which took pride of place on the front of the team’s jersey. The advertising deal was a part of the venues’ budgeted marketing. “This year the kit will be adorned by our new Great Lake Taupō logo which should look great on TV and on the rugby paddock of course,” said Mayor Rick.

Council CEO, Rob Williams, says the collaboration with our local rugby franchise partners was an appropriate method of increasing brand awareness with rugby being the major focus for New Zealand this year. “And with Owen Delany Park being the home to King Country Rugby now for more than 25 years, it is a good fit.”

Sir Colin lives in Te Kuiti with his wife Verna and is a strong supporter and life member of King Country Rugby. He is an ambassador for Taupō in the lead up to and including Rugby World Cup 2011, attending local events and functions. Later this year, he is being honoured at the Living Legends native tree planting day at Whakaipo Bay on 18 September.

The meeting was also attended by Rugby NZ 2011 CEO, Martin Snedden, who says Taupō is in a good position to receive travellers for RWC 2011 after witnessing the success of the roadshow earlier that morning.
