The one-lane Kopu Bridge near Thames has been closed off due to a structural issue.

The Kopu Bridge near Thames has been closed until further notice, due to a structural issue.

There are unconfirmed reports there's a hole in the bridge and the New Zealand Transport Agency has closed it to traffic.

Police said they had been advised that there is a 'structural issue' with the bridge.

The middle swing part of the bridge is currently being examined and all access to the bridge is closed.

At this stage the closure is until further notice.

Motorists are advised to use diversions through Paeroa.

A new $40 million bridge is being built nearby and should be complete by mid next year.
