Traffic light control boxes around Hastings are to take on a new and impressive look.

‘Paint 8’ is a continuation of the mural painting project which began around the district in 2010. It will see eight traffic light boxes painted with murals depicting city life.

The design of the new traffic light box murals must be representative of particular themes which include the history, physical character or people who use the location. Other themes which could be depicted are landscape, flora and fauna, Keep Hastings Beautiful, cultural character or community pride.

Anyone submitting a design must nominate the location of the painting from the list below and supply a colour image of the intended picture.

Environment Enhancement officer Jacqui Davis says” ‘Paint 8’ will make a significant difference to the look of the city. The eight traffic light control boxes will take on a completely new look once they are painted and the murals will add another splash of colour to Hastings streetscape”.

Ms Davis says” the entries will be judged by a panel including Deputy Mayor Cynthia Bowers, Hastings City Art Gallery Director Maree Mills and Council Parks and Properties Assets Manager, Colin Hosford.”

One of the most impressive murals to be completed used hand prints from the public on a 30 metre wall on Big Save Furniture in Heretaunga Street while more recently landscape murals were painted on the walls of the toilet block at Whirinaki Beach” Ms Davis says.

Ideas for the murals can be presented from Monday August 1st and the work is expected to be completed by Friday September 16th.
