WELLINGTON

A Memorandum of Understanding was signed today between the Horowhenua Police and the Horowhenua District Council in a bid to work together on shared goals.

The purpose of the document between the two parties is to establish and promote a collaborative working relationship covering, consultation on the priorities and plans of each party, where the business overlaps; consultation on initiatives relating to community safety and crime prevention; communication and media strategies; coordination of joint projects and common activities in crime prevention, intervention and reduction; training; sharing of information; and emergency management.

Senior Sergeant Willie Roy says the Police and the Council have maintained a good working relationship in the past.

"The MOU enhances the relationship by cementing goals and strategies that will benefit the residents of Horowhenua."

Horowhenua District Council Chief Executive David Ward says one of the council's desired community outcomes is to have a community where all people enjoy personal safety and security within the District.

"To formally agree to a collaborative working relationship we hope to enhance community safety and community capability to prevent crime through the promotion and development of local initiatives."

"We aim to support each other by working towards uniform service delivery in those joint plans and projects."
