WANAKA

Northern Hemisphere summer time sees world class skiers descend on Wanaka to race train in top conditions at Treble Cone Ski Area. The resort is currently hosting the 18 strong Austrian ladies team who are visiting the area for the 13th time.

In addition to the Treble Cone facilities, Lake Wanaka’s generous choice of accommodation, abundance of off snow activities, fantastic weather and its outstanding scenery make it the perfect training ground for athletes.

“It’s such a beautiful place to stay. No altitude adjustments are required meaning our racers can train hard and recover quickly in beautiful surroundings,” said Herbert Mandl, Head of the Austrian Ski team.

Treble Cone offers ideal race training conditions with its steep and varied natural terrain, challenging even to the best of ski racers. A typical days training at Treble Cone for the Austrian team sees them race train on Main Street for two hours before it opens up to the general public at 9.00am. The pistes are prepared for training to ensure hard, fast and difficult conditions similar to those racers may find on race day. They then move over to the Big Skite which is used for short Giant Slalom practice. Off slope activities include weights sessions, gym work and cycling.

“We’ve been coming to Wanaka for a long time now and have a strong relationship with Treble Cone and the Treble Cone Race Academy who occasionally train with us. The weather at the moment is just incredible offering perfect conditions for our training programme. It’s the only mountain in the area steep enough to offer suitable race training,” said Herbert Mandl.
