A free seminar on Thursday 8 September in the Whangarei Central Library will help newcomers to Whangarei understand how the New Zealand Health System works.

The seminar is offered by Settlement Support – Whangarei, a service that supports new migrants to learn about local systems and find the information they need in order to settle easily.

Entitled, ‘Navigating the New Zealand health system’, the seminar offers a basic overview of our national health system, the key health sector organisations and their functions.

Speakers from Whangarei Hospital, the Manaia Health PHO and the Accident Compensation Corporation will outline the processes and relationships between health care providers, and a speaker from the Health and Disability Commission will discuss people’s rights while receiving health care.

The seminar will also explain the differences in accessing the health system for New Zealanders and non-New Zealanders, as well as public and private healthcare options and benefits.

“Newcomers to New Zealand frequently ask about heath services,” says Ellen Altshuler, Settlement Support Coordinator. “They want to know how to find a GP, whether health insurance is needed, what to do if they are injured on the weekend, and what a PHO is.

“Not knowing what to expect or how the health system differs from that of their home country can be frightening.”

An information pack will be given to each seminar participant with contact details for key local health providers including emergency services, the hospital, primary health services and other providers.

“Although the seminar is aimed at migrants, anyone who is new to Whangarei or confused about how the health system works will benefit,” Ellen Altshuler says.

The seminar will be held at the Central Library’s May Bain Room on Thursday 8 September at 11am to 1pm. Tea, coffee and a light lunch will be provided.
