Christchurch resident Bryan Chang and Aucklander Craig Lord got into the true giving spirit on Saturday, staging the "Undie 1000", a one kilometre fundraiser run down the pit lane of the 2011 Asset Finance Taupo 1000 international offroad race in 2 degree temperatures. The pair stripped to their boxers for nominated causes: Lord for the Christchurch RSPCA and Chang for the Christchurch Cholmondely Children's Home, which was destroyed in the series of earthquakes that have devastated Christchurch over the past 11 months.
They were required to sprint the 1000 metre length of pit lane, pick up "manly" pink collection buckets with their names on them and then run back, soliciting donations as they went. Both were soaked to the bone by other races teams who used buckets of water and an H2O fire extinguisher to douse the pair "in case they were getting overheated".
The result: Craig Lord, racing for the animals of Christchurch, second overall with $322.40. Bryan Chang, for the Cholmondely Children's Home, first place with $374.05...and one bottlecap.
