Increased funding will allow new children’s programmes to be developed at FlaXrock recreation centre.

FlaXrock is a Hastings District Council run facility in Flaxmere that provides the community with exciting sporting, fitness, adventure and social activities.

The new programmes are being developed following a generous grant from the Flaxmere Licensing Trust.

Tumbling Tots (preschool gymnastics) and ‘FlaXrock Kids’ (sports, zumbatonic and rock climbing/abseiling) have already begun as a result of the grant. The kids programme is to be extended to include high school students in the future while "Getting Started" a new entrants programme is in the planning stages.

Flaxmere Licensing Trust Chairman Ken Kibblewhite says”the Trust is pleased to be able to work with FlaXrock to provide these activity programs for the young and teens of Flaxmere. The facilities at the centre are among the best in NZ and the Trust is keen to see their promotion and use by the community.”

“The Trust has long recognised that the future of Flaxmere is dependent on providing the best education for our youth and inspiring them to develop their character and pride through active participation in sport. This aim can be furthered by shared physical activities such as the programs being promoted at FlaXrock,” Mr Kibblewhite says.

Flaxmere Councillor Jacoby Poulain says “these are exciting times in the development of Flaxmere, and both the council and the community are keen to see FlaXrock contribute to this development. The facility is being encouraged to develop innovative programmes and become a place that supports the growth of people and the community.”

“The fact that the Licensing Trust is supporting FlaXrock to develop new programmes shows the value being placed on the facility by the community. It will become instrumental in increasing young people’s motivation and confidence to ensure they are able to progress to the next step along life’s journey.”

Along with providing programmes for children, FlaXrock has one of the best indoor rock climbing walls in the country. The wall is 13 metres high and skilled instructors are able to help anyone learn to climb in a safe environment.
