Japan got a taste of inclement New Zealand weather during their first training session at Silverdale Rugby Club on Friday.

The Brave Blossoms had almost finished a two-hour practice when a short burst of heavy rain fell on the area, 30 km north of Auckland.

The majority of the team showed their determination by staying on the field. But a few decided to head for cover - and while they might have escaped the rain, they didn't escape the attention of their coach, New Zealander John Kirwan.

"I had a little bit of an issue with a couple of the little half backs that got a little bit cold and ran inside, so I had to ask them if they want to be selected if it's raining and cold," Kirwan said.

Kirwan predicted a clothing change would help his charges to acclimatise.

"I'm sure the woollen issue that we got yesterday might be used tomorrow, but we had a bit of a laugh about it. I felt at home anyway."

So hard it hurt

After a hot shower a few of the players gave their impressions of the conditions.

“It was so cold out on the field. The rain came down so hard it hurt. I couldn’t see because the rain covered my eyes," said hooker Hiroki Yuhara.

"Personally, I like it cold more than hot. I feel better in this sort of weather,” lock Toshizumi Kitagawa said.

Japan's captain, Takashi Kikutani, played down any discomfort caused by the downpour as part of the experience of competing in a foreign country.

"That's New Zealand for you. I'll just try to enjoy the weather along with the rugby and have a good time."

However, the Japanese will no doubt be hoping for a clear evening when they take on France in their opening match of Rugby World Cup 2011 on Saturday, 10 September.
