The South Island has been reminded enough times in the last year of the force of Mother Nature and how prepared we need to be. We had major floods last December and experienced thousands of Canterbury people coming to Nelson to temporarily escape the earthquakes.

The Civil Defence plan for Nelson Tasman is being reviewed and this is the chance for people to have a say about how Civil Defence is organised in our community and what will happen in an event that threatens life and/or property.

The Nelson Tasman Civil Defence Emergency Management Group has released its Draft Regional Plan for consultation providing the people of the region an insight into, and an opportunity to contribute to, the region’s ability to cope with a disaster.

The plan sets out how Civil Defence is organised in our region and describes how the region prepares for, responds to and recovers from emergency events.

“It is important people have the opportunity to contribute as we rely on local knowledge and input so we prepare as best we can”, said Roger Ball, the region’s Civil Defence Emergency Management manager.

“Recent experience has shown the response to emergency events depends on a close partnership between officials, emergency services and locals. To help this partnership work anywhere, anytime it is important you contribute to the plan.”
