Former Councillor remembered

Colin Hammond, long-term Bay of Plenty resident and community representative passed away in Whakatāne last night.

Bay of Plenty Regional Council Chairman John Cronin said Mr Hammond had a long and distinguished career in governance and will be remembered for his determination and commitment.

"He was a man of strong views and was very passionate in working for his community."

"Our thoughts go out to his family at this time of loss," Mr Cronin said.

Mr Hammond was a well-regarded Councillor for Whakatāne District Council from 1980 until 1989, when he became a Councillor for Bay of Plenty Regional Council from 1995 until 1998. Mr Hammond then returned to the Whakatane District Council as Mayor, from 1998 until his withdrawal from local politics in 2004.

During his time at the Bay of Plenty Regional Council he was a member of a number of committees, including the Regulation and Monitoring committee; Finance and Corporate committee; and Operations and Rural Services committee.
