Te Tumu Kaituna community planting day

When? This Sunday - 11 September, 9:30am - 12:00 noon

The Te Tumu Kaituna 7B2 property is an 18 hectare block of coastal land between Pāpāmoa and the Kaituna River. Since early 2010 trustees have been working with both Nga Whenua Rāhui and the Bay of Plenty Regional Council to protect and restore the dunes through a Biodiversity Management Plan.

This was not a simple exercise as the 400 landowners are distributed around the North Island and beyond, so a series of hui were held from Rotorua to Hastings. After listening to the proposal the owners gave their consent.

The Biodiversity Management Plan was signed earlier this year and already significant works have been completed. The indigenous dune vegetation has been ring fenced to exclude vehicles and stock.

A smaller 8 hectare portion of the land has also been surrounded by a special rabbit-proof fence made of marine grade stainless steel mesh.

The trustees are very happy with the improvements to their whenua to date, and have started work to control pest plants and re-plant some of the bare areas with natives. Eradication of rabbits is also underway.

Meet at the very end of Pāpāmoa Beach Rd (closest to Maketū) at 9:30am sharp so you can be taken through the locked gate and onto a very special dune area which has recently been fenced to exclude rabbits.
