Nominations open today (Monday) for the sixth annual Heart of the District Awards.

“These awards have really progressed into an anticipated community event,” Queenstown Lakes District Council arts and events facilitator, Jan Maxwell said. “We can’t wait to receive more outstanding entries this year.”

Groups or individuals could either be nominated or enter themselves into the six major categories:

Arts
Landscape and urban design
Youth
Business
Environmental and heritage
Social and cultural

Civic Awards, awarded at the discretion of the Mayor, also formed part of the awards ceremony.

“This is a chance for groups and individuals to receive some well deserved recognition from both the council and community,” Mrs Maxwell said.

In line with previous years, all finalists would receive a framed certificate, a native tree and their achievements showcased on the night.

This year the awards would be held at the Memorial Hall on Friday November 16, 2007 from 7pm. The ‘cabaret style’ night would include entertainment, a glass of wine and nibbles for all attendees.

“It’s always neat to see both council staff and councillors enjoy getting involved in every aspect of the awards evening, from catering for the event to presenting the awards,” Mrs Maxwell said.

Entry to the evening would cost $15 per adult and $10 per child and would be sold as tables of ten. All finalists would receive a free ticket.

Nomination forms could be downloaded from the council website homepage www.qldc.govt.nz or picked up from Wanaka or Queenstown council offices.

Nominations or entries must be received by October 26.
