WELLINGTON CITY

South Africa rate second row Bakkies Botha a "major concern" for their opening Pool D game against Wales.

With just three days before Sunday's clash at Wellington Regional Stadium, Springboks assistant coach Dick Muir was far from optimistic on Thursday.

Botha, 32, is battling Achilles tendinosis, and Muir conceded: "We’re a little bit worried about Bakkies. He’s our major concern.

“Being a big man, he obviously takes a lot of pressure in that area. He’s so important for us for the remainder of the competition that we wouldn’t take any chances with him.

“We’ll take it week by week, but, unfortunately, I think he’s going to be out this time.”

Muir was more upbeat about the prospects of three other players who had question marks over them - second row Victor Matfield (hamstring), wing Bryan Habana (hamstring) and flanker Schalk Burger (thumb injury). A final decision on their availability will be made on Friday before the team announcement.

Muir said South Africa's form in the Tri Nations, in which they finished last behind Australia and New Zealand, and being pushed all the way by Wales in their last three encounters, would have little relevance.

"We've been over there (Wales) with an under-strength side at times, although you wouldn't want to say that. Sometimes you do leave players behind because of fatigue or injury. Sunday will show what it’s all about."

Muir said the blustery Wellington winds had played havoc with South Africa's kicking practice, but warned the Wales full back to expect some pressure under the high ball.

"With our style, we've looked to give the ball a bit of air and he may be collecting a few," he said.
