BLENHEIM

Russia’s youngest player, full back Denis Simplikevich, received a late invitation to Rugby World Cup 2011 but seems confident about his possible international debut.

“Some time ago, I did not even think about playing at the World Cup,'' the 20-year-old said.

"I was a regular member of the Russian junior squad but have not played a single official game for the national team.

"I knew that Kingsley Jones (Russia's Welsh team director and forwards coach) was following my playing activity. He was coming to the Russian junior camp for training, so we were in regular contact."

Simplikevich showed his speed at the 2010 Junior World Rugby Trophy but believes he was especially noticed when playing for the national Sevens team at this year's European Championship.

“I broke my nose during that competition but it was worthwhile as I was invited to the national team major training camp in Sochi, where I spent 10 days out of 20.

More than a newcomer

"I was happy to become part of the squad and was not discouraged at all when I was not included in the national team list in August.

“Suddenly, before one of the games in the Russian championship, I heard that I would go to Britain where the last training camp was held. I have taken part in three test games there.

"It seems like I did really well and was therefore included in the team roster for the World Cup.”

Despite being a newcomer to the team, Simplikevich's ambitions extend beyond simply making the squad of 30.

“I understand that I have to get used quickly to my senior teammates. However difficult it might be, I wish to take part in all the four pool games if the coaches decide so.

“Making my debut here in New Zealand is an exciting prospect. If I don’t get injured, I hope to take my chance.”
