Martin Rodriguez kicked Argentina into a 6-3 lead after 40 minutes in which England conceded eight penalties in the Pool B match at Otago Stadium on Saturday.

Argentina fly half Felipe Contepomi's seventh-minute penalty, given for offside at the ruck, was matched by England counterpart Jonny Wilkinson five minutes later.

Pumas full back Rodriguez missed two penalties in the first 16 minutes but finally landed one in the 20th minute to give his side a three-point lead.

Wilkinson then missed a 28th-minute penalty when the Pumas' front row collapsed following a quick break by England full back Ben Foden.

Rodriguez sent another penalty wide six minutes from the break.
