BLENHEIM

Members of the Russian national team are looking forward to their imminent debut at the Rugby World Cup and are hoping it can boost the sport’s popularity in their country.

“We are shocked by the attention that is given to rugby in New Zealand,” Russia head coach Nikolay Nerush said.

“We seem to be more popular here in Blenheim than we are in our country. However, looking at the sport’s development in New Zealand is encouraging as it gives us new impetus to carry on our efforts.”

Russia captain Vladislav Korshunov is eager to see rugby make more progress on the national sports scene.

Simplikevich an example

"My generation showed good results at the youth and junior international competitions," he said. "The positive momentum was not probably maintained in the right way as after that success a five- to six-year downfall has happened.

“The national team’s roster has not changed much since that time. Most of us are still there as the number of talented young players has diminished. Our presence here at the World Cup should let other Russian players know that they can also achieve that and hopefully do even better.”

The talented 20-year-old full back Denis Simplikevich is regarded as one of the up-and-coming players whose example can encourage other youngsters to strive for a place on the national team.

“I wish rugby were as known in my country as football or ice hockey,” Simplikevich said.
“We now feel the government’s support and such events as Rugby World Cup Sevens that will be held in Moscow in 2013 should inspire more children to take up our great sport.”

Russia's RWC 2011 opener will be against the USA at New Plymouth's Stadium Taranaki on Thursday, 15 September. Their other opponents in Pool C are Australia, Ireland and Italy.
