The Kooga Global Supporters Sevens rugby tournament is set to foster relationships with visitors from all around the world.

The tournament is the brainchild of the Hawke’s Bay Maori Business Network and aims to make the most of the rugby fever which is sweeping the country. Last month’s UNDY ONE HUNDY acted as the official launch of the tournament which saw around 20 competitors donning their most colourful underwear to race along Napier Road in Havelock North.

Chairman of the Hawke’s Bay Maori Business Network Jason Fox says” the Global 7’s is set to attract around 280 players who will represent each of the 20 countries that are competing in the 2011 Rugby World Cup.”

“Players are lining up to be part of the tournament, with quick fire action ensuring 33 games are played throughout the day. We expect most of the teams to be extremely competitive but there will be a few which will be there to experience the fun side of the tournament.”

Hastings Mayor Lawrence Yule commends the Maori Business Network for developing the concept for the tournament.”The Global 7’s is an excellent example of how the region is embracing Rugby World Cup fever. The Regional Sports Park will be a great venue as locals and visitors mix and mingle in the spirit of friendship and rugby.”

“It’s another great chance for the region to show off to the world and demonstrate how Hawke’s Bay is a fun and exciting place to visit. People will come from all over the country to take part in the tournament and this will provide another excellent boost for the regional economy” Mr Yule says.

Jason Fox says” the tournament will encourage players and supporters to indulge some of the most important aspects of New Zealand life-rugby, competition, business and a chance to foster global friendships.”

Kooga New Zealand has designed unique jerseys for the players who will represent each of the different countries. Proceeds from the tournament will go towards development of the Hawke's Bay Business Incubator and leadership forum.

The Kooga Global Supporters Sevens tournament will be played at the Hawke’s Bay Regional Sports Park on Saturday October 15th.
