Drop-in sessions to discuss a draft plan that will change the way we manage waste for the next six years in the Queenstown Lakes District will take place next week, QLDC solid waste manager Stefan Borowy said.

The plan will supersede the operative Waste Management Strategy, which was adopted in April 2003.

“Key changes captured in the draft plan include a focus on diversion from landfill, a review of the proposal to introduce a kerbside organic service and another 40 methods for working towards zero waste in the Lakes District,” Mr Borowy said.

The proposed plan provides direction for the Long Term Plan, Annual Plans, and community responsibilities for waste management and minimisation.

Mr Borowy had spoken to a number of community groups about the plan, receiving important feedback.

“It is an issue that affects us all and I think people have enjoyed the opportunity to understand the detail. The drop-in sessions will be really informal and a chance to sit down and have a chat about what’s involved,” he said.

The plan could also be viewed on the Council website click here and submissions made online.

The drop-in sessions would be held at the Arrowtown Athenaeum Hall,

Monday 19 September, the Queenstown Council Chambers, Tuesday 20 September and the Wanaka Council Office, Wednesday, 21 September. All drop-in sessions would be held from 4-6pm.

Submissions close on Friday, 23 September 2011.
