NEW PLYMOUTH

Almost 24 hours after Russia lost 13-6 to USA at Stadium Taranaki, emotions were still running high in the team camp.

But even though centre Konstantin Rachkov said the team was “physically and mentally overwhelmed” by their Rugby World Cup debut match, the players had not lost heart.

“It was really hard to get to sleep after the game. We feel tired and will need fair time to recover,” 32-year-old Rachkov said.

“I have just watched the game against USA for the third time and we are going to do it a few more times. Of course, it is not easy to watch a lost match. Adrenaline and emotions are still there.”

The Bears were analysing the match in the team hotel, discussing moves and tactics, but Rachkov said: “It's not up to the players to discuss who did wrong and what.

Mentally exhausted

“We understand that some of us have not showed the best play possible. Some of the guys have just been mentally exhausted before the game.

“It’s always the coaches’ job to analyse and decide whether any substitutions for the next games are necessary.”

Rachkov, who plays for French side Stade Phocéen Marseille Vitrolles, also had a happier moment in the match when converting a penalty in the second half.

“I am happy to get my first three points at the World Cup in yesterday’s historic match. (Fly half) Yury Kushnarev asked me to make that kick because he missed a very good penalty occasion before that.”

Rachkov said that the team must quickly refocus as the Rugby World Cup is far from over for Russia.

Much to play for

The Bears play Italy on 20 September, Ireland on 25 September and Australia on 1 October.

“We knew that the game against USA would probably be the most important for us,” Rachkov said.

“However, we have not come to the World Cup to play just one game.

“We should stay positive before we face Italy. We have demonstrated good play in defence and we have space for progress in the other elements.

“We should add dynamics to our ball delivery and try to be individually more creative.”
