BLENHEIM

Leaving New Plymouth after their 13-6 defeat to USA and returning to the team’s camp in Blenheim has produced positive changes in Russia's attitude to their next match in Pool C.

“The USA game is already in the past, so we have switched to the forthcoming match against Italy,” said Russia number 8 Victor Gresev.

“The coaches have analysed the game against USA and told us the mistakes that we have made,” said full back Igor Klyuchnikov.

“Our main problem was that we have lost the ball frequently, did not have long-lasting attacks and therefore were forced to spend much time in defence.

“We will apply different tactics against Italy. We are training various combinations in defence and attack.

"Our forwards are working on lineouts especially as we had many errors at throw-in against the USA.”

Going for victory

It was no surprise to the Russians to discover 12 changes to Italy’s starting XV beaten 32-6 by Australia in their pool opener.

“I don’t think that Italy will become weaker because of that,” Klyuchnikov said.

"Everyone in their roster of 30 is a skilled player, so the game against them will be difficult and intense."

Gresev, whose appearance as a substitute against USA proved effective, dared to declare even more forward-looking intentions.

“We will not appear on the pitch just to show that we can play well. We will try to clinch a victory," he said.

“I hope to be within the starting XV but it is up to the coaches to make such a decision.”
