Keep Dunedin Beautiful Co-ordinator Darlene Thomson is appealing for anyone who may have information about two missing murals to contact her.
The murals, from the hoarding that surrounded the Forsyth Barr Stadium during its construction, were the two last murals to be gifted back to their artists by Arrow International. The artists were Ravensbourne School, whose mural appeared in the media not long after it was painted as it was the only one to be vandalised, and the other a member of from Community Care Trust.
Ravensbourne School Principal Megan Odgers says “We are really disappointed. We have a space ready and waiting for it to be put on our school wall. The children have been looking forward to its return.”
Support worker for the Community Care Trust, Richelle Williams says “We are hoping for the safe return of the artist’s work which was to be displayed here for all to enjoy.”
The murals were being stored at Tahuna Park alongside a Task Force Green storage container, until they could be returned. Mrs Thomson says, “They were stored securely and well out of sight – someone would have to go looking pretty hard to find them.”
Tahuna Park is accessed through a gate which remains locked when the park is not in use. The murals had been sighted in early September by KDB staff, but were missing when Task Force Green team vacated their premises for the duration of RWC 2011. Mrs Thomson and Task Force Green workers have contacted those groups that they are aware of who have access to the Park in case the murals have simply been moved by mistake.
The murals are very colourful and are painted on several sheets of solid marine plywood. They are quite heavy and would be cumbersome to carry. Mrs Thomson is appealing to the community for information as to their whereabouts. Information can be forwarded to the DCC Customer Services Agency at dcc@dcc.govt.nz or 03 477 4000.
