Future looks bright for Danie van Wyk

Namibia captain Jacques Burger is a big fan of wing Danie van Wyk.

Burger was named player of the year for Saracens, a club he helped to the 2010 English Premiership title, and knows a thing or two about lining up with star players.

So it means a lot when he does not hesitate to nominate van Wyk the best of the Welwitschias at Rugby World Cup 2011.

"For the last month Danie van Wyk has been the real star of our team," the flanker said.

"I see a bright future for him. He makes it look easy."

Van Wyk has been one of the bright spots for Namibia at this tournament.

Bit of luck

His incisive runs from the edge have led to several Namibia breaks, and he scored a try in their 49-12 loss to Samoa.

But trying to get the wing to sing his own praises is almost as difficult as tackling his lanky 189cm, 96kg frame on the break.

"We created some opportunities for ourselves, and luckily I was at the end of some of them with a bit of luck," he said of his first two RWC 2011 performances.

Van Wyk was called into the Namibia team just a few months ago after other squad members were injured.

"Since he's arrived he's been amazing," Burger said.

Big honour

"It's really nice having him in the team. He makes a big difference in the backline."
Van Wyk acknowledged he had made a difference.

"There might be some moments in the game where I feel I contributed to Namibian rugby when we made some metres somewhere or won some battles up in front.

"Every time I play it's a big honour and a big privilege for me."

Burger thinks that more honours and privileges are in store for his teammate.

"He's a top player. It would be sad if he doesn't get picked up by a big club," the captain said.

Open to offers

"It's a massive blessing having him. It'd be a crime if somebody doesn't want to sign him. I'm sure there would be somebody interested. I would be."

Right now van Wyk is content playing in the Namibian capital of Windhoek for club side United, but he is definitely open to any offers.

"I have a good rugby career, but also I want to keep my options open.

"I'm open for new challenges. If at the end (of RWC 2011) there comes a contract somewhere that will bring some new challenges then I would be really looking forward to that."

Van Wyk's next chance to impress comes on Thursday, when Namibia take on defending champions South Africa at North Harbour Stadium in Auckland.
