Winter Warmers makes reading fun

Getting Waikato kids into books just became a whole lot easier thanks to the Waikato District Libraries ‘Winter Warmers’ reading programme.

Held annually, the free school holiday reading programme encourages children aged four to 12 years old to visit their local library and explore books.

Waikato District Council, general manager stakeholder relations, Jo Ireland, said Winter Warmers was always an extremely popular event with spaces filling up very quickly,

“This year’s theme is the Rugby World Cup so we envisage the programme will be even more popular than usual. We recommend parents register their children for the programme right away, otherwise they may miss out, as spaces are limited.

“The programme involves children reading a book, and when they have finished their book, to report into the library to tell the staff what they enjoyed most about the book. Stickers are handed out after each book report and every book report gives the child an entry into the grand prize draw,” she said.
Winter Warmers will run from Monday 26 September to Friday 21 October.

To sign up to the programme, children need to be or become a member of Waikato District Libraries. Libraries are located in Huntly, Ngaruawahia, Raglan, Te Kauwhata or Tuakau.
