The Hastings District Youth Council is urging youth from around the region to take an active interest in the upcoming general election.

Youth Council member Sarah Fagan says “it’s so important that everyone who is eligible to vote, does so on election day. Every three years we have the opportunity to make our voice heard and we can help decide whether to retain the current government or give the opposition party a chance. Who gets into power is important, as the government makes decisions that affect us and the people around us.”

“We want you to tick the box but think about what’s important to you first, then decide who and what to vote for. We have the opportunity to be proactive about what the government does,” Sarah Fagan says

The Youth Council believes there needs to be more discussion on politics at home and with friends while politicians need to make election campaigns far more relevant to younger audiences.

Education and families are the biggest influences in helping young people to engage in voting and other activities and studies show, those who take an interest in voting at a young age are more likely to put more into and get more out of their communities.

“Voting decides our future, and we need to be part of that.” says Sarah Fagan. The electoral rolls close for printing in a few weeks, so it’s time to make sure you have enrolled.”

Everyone aged 18 and over is required to enrol but over 120,000 of New Zealand’s 18-24 year olds are still to do so. They may not know how to enrol, or might not have thought about it.

To enrol to vote in the 2011 general election (or change your address) go to www.elections.org.nz, freetext your name and address to 3676, call 0800 36 76 56 or pick up an enrolment form at a PostShop.

Voting is important, so make sure you are enrolled.
