The first Hurricanes Regional Multisport event for athletes with disabilities will be held Tuesday October 4 at Action Indoor Sports Centre.

Ten teams of secondary school athletes from Taranaki, Wanganui, Manawatu, Hawkes Bay, Wairapapa, Gisborne and Welllington will compete in basketball and football.
The event is supported by Sport Manawatu, Halberg and Special Olympics New Zealand.

Sport Manawatu sport opportunity advisor Helen Johnson says, “it gives the students a chance to represent their region and experience playing sport with unfamiliar faces by establishing a regional team.”

The team will be made up with students from Waiopehu College, Feilding High School, Awatapu College, and Freyberg High School who all have special education units within their schools.

“The event is limited to 10 teams from seven regions for the first time around but with high hopes of expanding the event to incorporate more sports and more teams,” says event organiser Julia Sanson from Special Olympics New Zealand.
