‘Look and see’ scoops art award

Saturday night saw the launch of the Waikato Sculpture Trust’s annual outdoor glass exhibition held at the Sculpture Park @ Waitakaruru Arboretum. This unique event exhibits the work of some of New Zealand’s finest glass artists along with the work of students from the Wanganui Glass School. The Gillian Sutton student art award was announced at the preview.

Art consultant Alison Ewing who judged the award spent a contemplative afternoon at the Park a few days before the preview.

Alison’s brief was to choose a winner from amongst the eight 2nd year Wanganui glass student entries. While Alison admired the standard of the student work in general, she found herself drawn back to one piece in particular; Matthew Green’s ‘Look and See’-- ‘there was something quirky about the winning work which brought me back for a second look’.

Matthew’s installation piece is a multimedia work designed with the Refraction Exhibition in mind. However I think even Matthew underestimated the extent of this interaction! The birds simply can’t resist it and as Alison commented, ‘the birds love it so much that it should come with a cleaning cloth!’

‘With the limited means of a student, Matthew has created a work that dares to be a little different. This work could be a model for a larger piece where the glass could make a bigger statement or it could sit quietly in a corner of the garden waiting for you to look and see who appears.’ Make time to visit this beautiful event timed to coincide with spring and the new growth that comes with the season.

Refraction runs until November the 13th, bring the children and a picnic, or you are very welcome at the Leaping Frog café open during the weekends.
