Tamahere public to meet with NZTA and Council

Safe, accessible and fluid access for people and traffic through Tamahere and the successful development of recreation and retail areas will be discussed at a public information day to be hosted by NZTA and Waikato District Council on 27 October.

Waikato District Council general manager strategy & support Tony Whitaker says the joint information day hosted by NZTA and Waikato District Council means the public have an opportunity to consider the latest proposals affecting the Tamahere area.

“We’ve been working closely with NZTA on the design and thinking behind the Southern Interchange, (which forms part of the Hamilton Section of the Waikato Expressway) and its implications for the Tamahere area. We’re also working with Tamahere residents on our shared vision for the future which includes developing a concept of how the village hub may look,” he said.
“It makes sense to present the options in one location to give people the opportunity to discuss key elements with the project teams involved and give feedback.”
The Hamilton Section Southern Interchange is planned for completion in 2019 and will be located in the vicinity of Cherry Lane. It will provide a grade-separated connection between the expressway and the Cambridge Road entry into Hamilton City.
Key considerations for the design of the Southern Interchange and the adjacent section of expressway to be discussed at the public information day are traffic volume, the need for connectivity between Tamahere east and west, safety and access for pedestrians and cyclists.

In July 2010 and February 2011 Waikato District Council sought feedback on how the community wanted to see the Tamahere Country Living Zone progress in the future. The council has since undertaken work on the layout and zoning proposed for the council-owned land adjacent to Tamahere School.
At the information day, the council will report back on that work including the proposed urban design guide for future developments in the proposed Tamahere village hub.
The key elements for discussion at the public information day are:

• The design for the Southern Interchange Hamilton Section for the Waikato Expressway
• East/west connectivity at the proposed Southern Interchange Hamilton Section
• A proposed concept of how the village hub may look once developed
• The local road network within the west Tamahere area.

The information day will be held at the Tamahere Community Hall, Devine Road on Thursday 27 October 2011, between 3.00pm and 7.00pm.
