Decision on fluoridation goes against evidence

The decision to stop fluoridation of New Plymouth’s drinking water supply is in the face of the weight of science evidence, says Water New Zealand’s chief executive, Murray Gibb.

“Water fluoridation has proven to be a cheap, safe public health measure over many years to reduce dental caries. This is why the Ministry of Health, along with many other international health bodies recommend that fluorine levels be adjusted to optimal levels.

“Tooth decay can largely be prevented through the use of this simple and effective tool for treating reticulated water supplies. The benefits of fluorine supplementation through this methodology accrue to water consumers regardless of age, income or education.

“In the 19th century, the instillation of reticulated water supplies along with wastewater systems contributed significantly to improved public health and longevity. Adjustment of fluorine to optimal levels in these supplies has brought significant added benefit,” said Mr Gibb.

“The United States Centres for Disease Control and Prevention has described water fluoridation as one of the 10 most important public health disease prevention measures in the 20th century. In this context the decision by elected officials to fly in the face of evidence is regretted,” he said.
