World renowned billionaire Sir Richard Branson has lent a large hand to Outward Bound, with preliminary figures showing that in excess of $350,000 was raised for the charity at last night’s glittering banquet dinner.

Attendees were wined and dined at Auckland’s Viaduct Events Centre whilst they took part in both live and silent auctions which compromised a number of highly sought after items.

Highlights of the live auction included: a lunch for 10 people onboard Sir Michael Hill’s super yacht hosted by Rachel Hunter and former English rugby player Martin Bayfield and a ten-course dinner prepared by Simon Gault with the Rt Hon John Key in attendance. A one-hour live performance ‘in home’ by New Zealand’s iconic musician Dave Dobbyn fetched the highest bid on the night of $35K.

During the evening, Sir Richard spoke for close to an hour about his own life story and lessons from his achievements.

Outward Bound Chief Executive Officer, Trevor Taylor, said the evening was an unbelievable outcome for Outward Bound.

“The amount raised for Outward Bound has surpassed all our expectations. We are extremely grateful to all the guests who attended the gala dinner, the major sponsors - The BNZ and Auckland City - and all others who so generously gave to help support Outward Bound.”

Trevor said the funds raised would be used to help ensure that more young New Zealanders have the opportunity to take up the Outward Bound challenge.

“As we enter our 50th anniversary year, this funding boost couldn’t have come at a better time as it will enable us to ensure that the cost of attending an Outward Bound course does not become a barrier for people.”
