Hazardous waste collection returns to Hawke's Bay

<p>The HazMobile returns to Hawke&#39;s Bay next month, giving residents the opportunity to get rid of their hazardous waste.<br /> <br /> The collection is a free service which allows householders to safely dispose of hazardous material including oils, chemicals, batteries and solvents.<br /> <br /> The service operates like a drive-through - the driver stays in the car, while staff unload the hazardous material and then you drive away. It is recommended that waste items are packed into boxes so they are easy to remove from a vehicle.<br /> <br /> Waste which will be accepted at HazMobile include:</p> <ul> <li> &nbsp;</li> <li> Household chemicals: including toilet, drain and oven cleaners, disinfectants, furniture and shoe polish and pool chemicals</li> <li> Garden chemicals: pesticides, herbicides and fertilisers</li> <li> Automotive products: waste oil, petrol, diesel, brake fluid and car care products.</li> <li> DIY products: varnishes, solvents, paint strippers, glues and wood preservatives.</li> <li> Light bulbs: Fluorescent tubes, energy-saving light bulbs and ultraviolet light bulbs.</li> <li> Batteries: wet-cell batteries used in cars and boats, rechargeable batteries used in appliances</li> <li> Gas cylinders</li> <li> Paint: oil and acrylic based paints along with aerosol cans</li> </ul> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p>If you are unsure about the disposal of a product check the labelling &ndash; if it uses words such as &ldquo;Warning&rdquo;, &ldquo;Danger&rdquo;, &ldquo;Caution&rdquo;, &ldquo;Poison&rdquo; or &ldquo;Do not dispose of with household rubbish&rdquo; you can assume HazMobile will accept it.<br /> <br /> Hastings District Council Waste Minimisation Planner Angela Atkins says hazardous waste can cause serious harm to people and the environment if it is not disposed of correctly.<br /> <br /> &quot;All residents should have a look around their properties to identify items which could be best disposed of at the HazMobile.&quot;<br /> <br /> HazMobile collections will be located at the Hastings Sports Centre, Railway Road on Saturday November 12th and at Eastern Truck and Marine, Austin Street Onekawa, Napier on Sunday November 13th and will be open from 10am -2pm on those days.<br /> <br /> The HazMobile collection is supported by the Hastings District Council, Hawke&#39;s Bay Regional Council and Napier City Council.<br /> <br /> <strong>NOTE:</strong><br /> <br /> a) Non-rechargeable dry-cell batteries (zinc carbon, zinc chloride and alkaline batteries in AA, AAA, C, and D sizes) are NOT classified as hazardous waste and can be disposed of in the normal household rubbish</p> <p>b) HazMobile does not accept commercial waste or waste in commercial amounts.</p>
