It’s that time of the year when Rotorua District Council (RDC) is on the lookout for the city’s future leaders. The council is seeking applications for the 2012 Rotorua District Youth Council (RDYC).

RDYC meet fortnightly to discuss current youth issues, learn about local government and decision-making, get involved in the community, and help give Rotorua youth a voice. Youth councillors also support and organise youth events and activities, and participate in various local and national initiatives.

RDC youth projects officer Jill Campbell says she is looking for a diverse group of 13 to 18 year olds who can offer a youth perspective to council decisions and other issues affecting young people.

“Youth councillors are given numerous opportunities to be involved in great community activities throughout their term on council.

“They bring together a mix of ethnicity, geographic location, gender and experience, and aim to encourage other youth participation in the community.”

She says youth councillors are expected to be able to problem-solve, work well in a team, have a keen interest in civic duty, be prepared to discuss issues affecting Rotorua’s young people, be good listeners and have a network of peers to share information with.

Rotorua District Youth Council will meet every second Tuesday during 2012, as well as attend initial training from 10 to12 February.

Last day for applications is Thursday 1 December 2011 at 5pm. Twenty young people will be shortlisted and interviewed on 9 or 10 December. Fifteen youth councillors will then be selected and notified by 15 December.
