Unlocked cars are an easy target for thieves. There has been a big spate of thefts around Blenheim recently with the areas of Witherlea, Redwoodtown, Springlands and the CBD hit hardest. Sometimes cars are broken into but, in many cases, items are being stolen from unlocked cars.

Handbags or briefcases, laptop computers, iPods or cell phones left in the car will attract thieves. They will also steal GPS devices, hands-free phone kits and car stereo gear.

At best, theft of personal items can be extremely inconvenient and may cause you to lose your no-claim insurance discount. At worst, your car may be damaged and personal documentation, cash and expensive items stolen.

  • An unlocked car parked on the street is the easiest target for thieves - try and park inside a garage or at least off the street.
  • Lock your vehicle and shut its windows, even if it is in a driveway.
  • Never leave cash or credit cards, briefcases or handbags inside your car. It’s also unwise to leave your vehicle records inside the glove box.
  • Always remove the ignition key when you park, even if your car is in the driveway or when you are filling up at a service station.
  • When parking in town, stick to areas with good lighting where the car can easily be seen.
