DPA, The National Pan Disability organisation is delighted that the election of new MP Mojo Mathers gives Deaf and disabled people a direct voice in national politics.

“This is wonderful news for Deaf and Disabled New Zealanders” says President Beverley Grammer. “It gives our community, New Zealand’s largest minority a direct voice at the highest level”.

Acting CEO Wendi Wicks welcomes Ms Mathers’ intention to advocate for deaf and disabled people. “It’s a great illustration of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, which says that disabled people should take up leadership roles” she says.

Having Mojo Mathers in this role will encourage other Deaf and Disabled people, particularly our youth to aspire to such leadership positions where our voices can be heard adds Beverley Grammer.
