Downtown Napier now has a purpose-designed and built cycle shelter in a central location to encourage more people to cycle into and around the CBD.

The new facility is dual purpose, with 19 stands holding up to 38 bicycles and bays for six motorcycles. The site, on the corner of Dalton and Station streets, was chosen because it is ideally suited for library users, commuters and holiday-makers. It is also close to public transport.

With a span of 4.2m x 11.7m and 2.3m high, it has built-in lights to help make it safe and secure at nights. The attractive contemporary-look design, undertaken by Napier City Council staff, features a roof of glass panels sand-blasted with a fern-leaf pattern. Council staff also prepared the construction plans for the structure’s manufacture.

A start was made on building in October and the project was completed in early December, ready for the Bay’s busy holiday season. The shelter is expected to attract most use over the summer months.
