Fireworks and kites will ensure that people’s eyes are kept skywards during the first two weeks of the annual Summerdaze festival.

Queenstown Lakes District Council’s arts and events facilitator Jan Maxwell said Summerdaze will launch on New Years’ Eve with a full programme of entertainment in downtown Queenstown and Wanaka and the ever popular fireworks displays.
“We’ve got two great line-ups this year,” Mrs Maxwell said.

“The DJ stage is back at the Memorial Gates in Queenstown while local favourites The Master Blasters will be followed by top covers band The Crystal Set on the main stage.”

“Wanaka will be featuring their local heroes The Station Agents followed by Mercury Crowe from Wellington. As is traditional, the fireworks will streak into the sky at midnight with the party finishing at 1am.”

Fireworks will not be the only things flying through the sky in the first week of January. Last year’s extremely popular kite making workshops and Grand Kite Display return with the workshops being expanded to Queenstown.

“The workshops were a huge hit in Wanaka last time around and we’re sure Queenstowners will relish the opportunity to get involved too,” Mrs Maxwell said.

“Numbers are limited for the workshops so bookings are encouraged and we’d love to see everyone who makes a kite come along to the Grand Kite Display at Pembroke Park in Wanaka to fly their kites together.”

Summerdaze runs all January long and Mrs Maxwell said there was something scheduled to take place on most days.

“It’s an extremely full calendar this year featuring everything from big music events like the Earthtonz NYE Music Festival to Tea Dances for the elder set,” she said.

”The ever popular Teddy Bears’ Picnics return and the new Chinese brush painting workshops, also look set to be popular.”

Summerdaze programmes have been delivered to all households district wide. Copies of the programme can also be found on the Summerdaze website www.summerdaze.co.nz
