On Saturday 11 February, Dunedin’s central city will be crammed with a diverse range of New Zealand made products and several thousand treasure hunters as the annual Thieves’ Alley Market Day kicks off.
The Thieves’ Alley Market Day, one of the main events in the Dunedin City Council’s Summer Programme, is Dunedin’s biggest market day and stall registrations have now closed, with more than 300 stalls booked.
In the past, stalls have numbered between 250 and 300, but, as the large cruise ship ‘Regatta’ is due in on the day, potential market customers are expected to be increased by several thousand, attracting a greater than usual uptake in stalls.
Although Dunedin City Council Community Events Co-ordinator Marilyn Anderson said there was no restriction on the numbers of stalls, there was a rush on the most sought after places this year.
“Markets are always popular both for people with crafts, local food and plants to sell and for buyers looking for a bargain. With stallholders from all over the South Island plus several from the North Island, there will be a great range of New Zealand made products for the ship passengers to choose from.” Ms Anderson said.
The market, in the Octagon, Bath Street, Princes, George and lower Stuart Streets, is on Saturday 11 February 2012 from 10am with an expected finishing time of 4pm.
